Hey Kristina Kay! It was wonderful to be there with you last evening to see you off and pray with the Team – it reminded us of when we would leave to go to Slovakia and Romania :)
As Grandpa wrote, we will bathe you in prayer and follow you daily as the reports come in. When you get into a situation that is “fearsome” remember to cry out to Jesus and He WILL answer “Call unto me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know”. 20. Kristina says:

Wow! God is perfect in every way and things have gone great so far! We got through the airport fine and I wasn’t even afraid. The first part of the building day today we had good cool weather because the sun didn’t come out. Then it started to rain a little so we prayed and some people just went to get their raincoats instead of just praying against it. Then suddenly it stopped and we got tons of work done. Our houses are really close together and it is really fun working with my team and the teams around me. The house is already built with all the drywall on the inside and out. It poured really hard just as we were getting done eating and it hindered us a little bit. I had to sweep tons of water out of our house. I found a good balance between building and playing with the kids and talking to the people there. My spanish/english dictionary is helping!!(Thanks, Max!) I got a pack of mints from my prayer partner and I shared. It was one of those again :) ) Near the end we played ball with the kids and took photos. ( I think I should teach them how to play 4-square, Nate! ) I said “hi” to Hermano Jesus for you, mom, he remembered you and asked if you were doing well :) I finally enjoyed the Guatemalan food for lunch which was rice and beans and tortillas, I ate the whole plate full! I am so thankful for all your prayers because I know they are working. I have peace here and I am excited to be here. I think though that I have eaten more candy than I would during the 4th of July! I love you all and miss you!

  21. Brenda DeVries says:

Kristina, it’s so good to hear about your day! I can’t wait to see some pictures of you and your team and the people you are getting to know. Thanks for saying hi to Hermano Jesus for me! I’m excited to see what the kids think of the animated animal book that we found in Spanish! I think 4-square would be great to teach them—hopefully you can explain the rules to them. :) Beans and rice are so good after a hard days work, aren’t they? I can taste them just thinking about it. Glad to hear you are doing well! Love you lots!
    Mom

  22. David Lycklama says:

One day done and already you are hungry. Must be you got a lot of work done.
I can see you playing with the kids in Guatemala. I remember how they were always buzzing around us when we were there. Let you light shine.

  24. Sharon Lycklama says:

Hi Precious Kristina Kay! I love reading the blogs daily on how your team and you are doing; it sounds very encouraging and exciting too to be part of a group like this with such an excellent spiritual leader as Kevin is, we are so grateful! And you sound like you are doing excellently and enjoying yourself immensely just being able to lose yourself in service to your Lord and Master and love on the team and the people who you serve in Guatemala. Enjoy every moment of every day, it passes all too quickly. Know that we are covering you, your leaders, and your team in prayer, and especially for the impact of the love of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to be seen and felt so intensely. I love you!! Grandma

  25. teamivanrest says:

Good morning! I am so glad that I can get on the computer and write some stuff and read everything that you all write! We had french toast this morning and I put peanut butter on it. It tasted amazing! We are going to put the stucko on today and things will get messy! Pray that the rain doesn’t hinder us. It rained again when we got back to the base and it gets really loud when we try to meet together for devotion time. :( Another thing that I forgot to mention is that we are building a house for a widow and Dan said that he has never seen her smile. She has a couple of kids and the only name of one I could catch was Ilda-Johanna, which I think is pretty sweet! When we started building this lady’s house and we told her to check it out, she smiled so big and thanked us over and over. At the beginning of the day I could tell she was hurting so much and she was in a daze. I can’t imagine losing what she lost. I don’t know if she has accepted Jesus or not so you could pray that she comes to know him, or if she already does then to reconnect with him and find joy. I had a fun time with Jenna last night hanging out on my bed and laughing our heads off! I am really enjoying my time here, but I am still learning how to step out of my comfort zone every day. I could use some prayers for that :) Thanks again for writing to me and please continue to do that. Tell me what you’re up to and what things are goin on back home too! Love you all!!!!!

  26. Jason Door says:

Kristina! I am so glad to hear that things are going well and that the team is bonding so well! It is definately and answer to prayers! I am so glad you all could bring a huge smile to that widows face! I am sure she appreciates the love and attention! Enjoy and prayers are with you!
    Jason

  27. Brenda DeVries says:

French toast with peanut butter…hhmm…not sure about that one. It’s nice to hear about who you are building for. Isn’t it cool that we found things for a lady every time we shopped? God knows how to prepare the way. I pray that He’ll put a smile on her face this week and give true joy to her heart!
Kara is out and about today…go figure! She had Kenzie over this morning, and she’s over at Claire’s this afternoon. I’m just working today and hope to get a lot done. It’s a really nice and sunny day today…we’ve had some rain, too, and yesterday Ivanrest Street was flooded over by the bridge. Your fish is doing well—we’re remembering to feed him!
I pulled some of the pictures off of the team page and put them on my facebook page so that other people could take a look. I’m really looking foward to hearing how tomorrow goes with your team and the dedications. Were you able to read any of the books to the kids? I also think it’s going to be amazing when you wear that skirt to the medical clinics…I know the ladies will really think that’s special.
Dad is working late tonight again, and he’s got a hair cut appointment if he can make it back on time. We’re actually home every night this week…that’s a first in quite a while! Sleep well tonight! Can’t wait to hear more from you! Love you lots! Mom

  28. Kristina says:

Hola! Building day 2 is complete and it is almost 4:00. We are ready to paint tomorrow, and we actually made porches for all of the houses which look pretty cool. Mom, I saw a girl with the same skirt design on, I asked her name but I only caught it for a second and couldn’t repeat it. I was a little out of it today. I tried to find things to do just before lunch but they were either things I didn’t know how to do, things where I would get in the way, or things I was just not willing to do. After a while I helped out with the porches and then found a girl to talk to. Ilda-yojanna followed me for a while and kept opening the window to the house to see me inside. I couldn’t get her to talk much but she helped me out a little and followed me. I got two little kisses from dos chicas as I was leaving! It was sooo sweet :D I’m excited to do the dedications tomorrow and to see the widow smile, whose name by the way is Maria- Enriquetta. I’m starting to miss you guys a little more now but not too badly. Mom, by the way my fish is a girl :) , and Kara had Kenzie who over? I know too mant Kenzies :P It didn’t rain at all today and the stucko is all dry! Thanks for praying for that. There was also a huge circular rainbow around the sun today that looked pretty awesome! I guess a tropical depression came through yesterday and is now is Mexico, but all is good now. I love you all and I know I said that already but its true so deal with it :P

Have fun painting tomorrow :) I’m praying your feel the power, presence and love of God during dedication.

Great to read your post. I’m praying for God’s blessing on your week of serving God in Guatamala!

  31. Sharon Lycklama says:

Hi Kristina! Oh that sweet little girl sounds so adorable, and those “das chicas”? Remember, I don’t know Spanish :) , I’m assuming little boys? That’s just precious!! The people sound so appreciative and welcoming and I just love the pictures of them all, they are beautiful people, all of them with hearts crying out for love and attention from you because you’re so willing to be there and give of your time, and do whatever you can to help out. We keep praying for open and willing hearts and minds. Well, my day started early with a breakfast out with someone at 6:30, then home and cleaned out the garage, weeded the garden, had my hair cut and “done” :) and visited with my hurting neighbor lady, after our dinner Grandpa and I drove to Dorr for icecream hoping to see the old cars, but they weren’t there as they’re doing construction on the road. Yesterday everyone came for coffee and donuts, then I took the girls and Mason to Mc D’s for lunch, then to the Humane Society, then to see all 15 of Katie’s kitty’s, Mason just loved being with us all for the day!! He cried when I took him home at 5:30 because he wanted to come back to Grandma’s house to play :) Anyway, that was my day, and I wouldn’t have written all that but you asked to hear what was happening here. We love you and miss you sweet Kristina! Grandma

  32. Sya Vogelzang says:

    Hi Kristina
It sounds like you are really enjoying your time in Guatemala. Your posts are so great to read. You are really looking around to see how the Lord can use you. And the people you meet sounds like you are a blessing to them. Take lots of pictures and hold the experience in your heart. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

  33. David Lycklama says:

What a wonderful report Kristina. You are making a difference, not just for today but for a long time in the live of the widow and others. Now they can enjoy the security of a safe home. We will pray they find the safe security of the love of Jesus too. Yesterday was all work for me and then a treat of ice cream with grandma at the end. Today is much the same with the day ending with our small group studying “Fearless” by Max Lucado. Comfort zones are comfortable, but they are not a good place to grow in, so I will pray that you step out and learn and experience and see that God is good all the time.
    Love Grandpa “L”

  34. Brenda DeVries says:

Praying for you today as you dedicate the houses and as you bring your gifts! Can’t wait to hear the reports of how God works in the lives of the families and the team!

  35. Kristina says:

It’s Friday, Koala bear wherever you are! (That’s for Kara!) Last night I met a spanish girl at the base named Paulina and I talked to her for a little bit. I also played a version of Uno called Dirty Uno with a couple people and Paulina. I helped make breadsticks last night to go along with the Domino’s pizza that they got for us!! Grandma, you sounded like you had a great day; icecream from that place in Dorr is amazing! I can’t believe Katie has 15 kitties! How is Casey doing, and Jenna for that matter? Nate, how’s life? :) I will post more when I can after we get back from the village. Please pray again for the families that we are building for and that they will dedicate their families and their homes to God!
    -Kristina

  36. Nate Axdorff says:

Hey Kristina! Sorry I haven’t replied in a few days. I have been very busy with random stuff. Maddie, Natalie, and James left for the DR so I hung out with them on wednesday before they left. All my friends are gone! Everyone is down south, and Kathleen is at a Catholic camp! So I have been practicing saxophone every second, because I got accepted into an adult jazz band in Coopersville! I am thinking about switching my major to music now. Just a thought. Miss ya, prayin for ya, and can’t wait to see you again!

  37. Casey says:

Hey nina, hows it going down there. Building houses and beating all the other ones by far I hope. things here arent much different for me that is. Thats just cause Im not home often and I dont get to see anyone. Jenna and me are fine, we are sending letteres back and forth and I will get to see her tomorrow. YAY!!!! Hopefully I can get her the chair I made for her and she can bring that up to her trailer. I hope to see you on Wednesday. I wont have work on that day so I will be home to hear all about it. I bet all of the little munchkins are doing backflips and cartwheels all around the hood and playing soccer. Are you guys playing any soccer, or is there not really time for that? lol There’s always time for soccer, but you have to play. Is it just like when we went there last time or is it different? Was there any close calls? Hope to see you soon?
    -Casey

  38. Sharon Lycklama says:

Hey Ninaka! You are having a perfectly awesome time there and we’re happy for you and thankful too; you love mingling with those kids and people don’t you? Can’t write much, have our Bible study here tonight and I have been doing my quilting class all day, so quick made a dessert and a taco dip and thought of you :)
Well, we have a thunderstorm coming, should be here in about 2 -3 hours, so that’ll be interesting tonight with everyone at our home! Enjoy to the max these last few days and as you do the clinic and ministry be blessed knowing that Jesus is truly using your willingness and joyful attitude! And we of course continue to pray for you and think of you, especially when we read all the posts!! I loveyou! Grandma

  39. Kristina says:

We just got back to the base before 7:00 p.m. It was a long day! I found out that my home was the one brick house, and not the one for the widow. We had a mom and a dad and they had a teenage boy, a boy and girl, and a little baby girl. The dad already believed in God and when we were done dedicating the house they all believed. The teenage boy seemed really distant at first and didn’t seem like he was paying attention but he still ended up giving his life to Christ! There were tons of tears today but many for tears of joy and the whole village followed us around everywhere! I put up the window curtain in the widow’s home( I figured it out by myself! :P ) and tons of people were watching me and commenting and pointing. haha that was fun! Our home doesn’t have a window so I’m glad I could give it to the widow’s home because I still had some connection with the people there. I kept watching a girl these past three days who was like a mom to the kids. She helped them out and told them where to go, she just had the characteristic of a leader. I found out her name was jut (you say it like ‘hoot’) and that she was 13 years old. Many of the kids only liked some of us because we gave them candy but I saw her helping other kids and she was crying during some of the dedications even though she wasn’t in any of those houses and she cried when we left. All of the people whose home we built dedicated their lives to God and it was a tiring but worth-while job to pray around each one of them. Nate, that is awesome that you got accepted into that jazz band! You need to teach me how to play the saxophone! I can’t wait to tell you more about my trip :) Casey, I think Jenna will love that chair, it was very thoughtful and it’s cool just cuz you made it! Grandma, how was the storm? I could see huge storm clouds today that just kept building so I took a picture of it. We didn’t get hit by it. Mom and Dad, I miss you and your hugs every night! I love ya and miss ya!
    -Kristina-

  40. Brenda DeVries says:

    Nina,
I loved reading your post! Yeah for the curtain! I knew it would find a good home, and I was praying for the widow today and for you and how things would go. How about the other things? I’m sure they went to just who they were meant for, too. Can’t wait to hear more in person! Dad and I went out tonight and there was a storm that blew through. When we got back, we found out that lightning had struck one of the houses/apartments down the street and there were a few firetrucks around. It was very hot today, but it cooled off over 20 degrees once the rain and storm came. We checked the weather and then saw ‘How it’s made’ on tv, because they were talking about how to make french horns. We thought that was pretty cool. Kara is having Sarah sleep over tonight. Tomorrow dad is going to take her fishing. And then she leaves for camp on Sunday! We keep praying for you and the team. Praying now for tomorrow and the medical clinics you will do, and for enough sleep so that you can keep up with it all and enjoy every moment that you can. Sounds like you’re still healthy, which is a good thing! Dad says hi…we just read your post together and we talked about the whole trip at dinner, too. We’re proud of you, and are really looking forward to hearing things in more detail. God is so good, and we know that you are in his hand. Keep your eyes open as I know you are, and you’ll see him at work. Love you so much! Hugs and kisses from me and dad….we miss you, too!

  41. David Lycklama says:

Let me get this straight. Pink on the outside, aqua on the inside. Didn’t I just see a house just like that around the corner from my house? Must be Guatemala colors. They do look cheerful. You guys did an awesome job. How much candy did YOU eat????? We’ll keep praying as you visit the clinics and do some work there. We’ll keep praying that your work does exactly what God sent you there to do. I hope you have a lot of pictures of your own that we can see when you get back.

    Love Grandpa “L”

  42. Linda says:

    Hola Nina -
How wonderful that everyone accepted Jesus into their hearts and newly built homes. It’s great to read your writtings on how things are going. I pray God continues to work through you as you continue to bond with the people. I pray the medical clinic goes well and that many people come forward tonight and accept Jesus into their hearts. Bless you Nina.
    Linda

  43. Kristina says:

Good morning! We got to sleep in an extra half hour so that means 6:30pm. Surprisingly I haven’t been too tired! Today we do the medical clinics and I’m excited for the preparations and the trip. I am hoping to wear that Guatemalan skirt today and it will look awesome with dirty t-shirts with stucco on them! :P I didn’t give away any of the books yet because I didn’t get a chance to so I think I will bring them to the villages we go to today and tomorrow. I only ate 3 skittles yesterday and that was how much candy intake I had, so I’m still feeling good. Someone from the village we’ve been working at gave Jenna a gift and we were looking at it and touching it. Then I had the bright idea of putting gum in our mouths without sanitizing our hands. As soon as we realized it we looked at each other wide-eyed and ran to the trash can to spit it out. Then we rinsed out our mouths a lot, sanitized our hands and got a new piece of gum. We definitely laughed a lot after that and I know it didn’t harm us because our stomachs would’ve been in knots by now. The trip this year is so different than 2 years ago and I love it. There were good things about 2 years ago but it was challenging in every way. This time it is still challenging and that is good but I also feel equipped to do everything that I need to do and I’m not distracted. Grandpa, I love the color of the houses inside, but for some reason our paint would not dry and when we tried to decorate it with different color paints it ran a little bit down the wall. That was a little sad but I hope it dried by now. Mom and dad, I hope you recorded the ‘How it was made’ show because I would like to see that, it sounds awesome! I will try to post more tomorrow because it will be a late night tonight so please pray that we have the strength to give it all we have! Lalalalalalala (That was me singing :) )
    -Kristina

  44. Brenda DeVries says:

    Kristina,
I knew you would love Guatemala even more this time around. That’s what happened to me, too. I think the books will be great for the kids tonight! Especially when they’re in line with their parents…you’ll have their attention for sure with the animated animals book! Dad and Kara are going fishing today…they just took off. Dippy is laying under the piano bench all sprawled out on his back, with his paws in the air….it’s so funny! I can’t figure out how he can sleep like that. It’s pretty warm already this morning. Sounds like you’re having great weather, which is really good. I hope the rain holds off today, too, so that you can get where you need to go tonight without worrying about the roads. I can hear you singing all the way over here! :) praying for tonight…I’ll look for your next post to see how it went. Love you!

  45. Kristy van wyhe says:

Kristina, I love reading your posts with all the details! Your mom’s posts were always the first ones I read when she went too! :-) It is so much fun seeing how God is using everyones gifts and talents. Praying that tonight at the medical clinic things went well and that many lives were changed as they heard God speak through the amazing Hermano Jesus. Praying for safe travels back to the base tonight or early in the morning. :-)
    Big hugs,
    kristy

  46. Bob and Carole Pettijohn says:

Dear Kristina, Thanks for all the news you are sending. I love reading all the stories and you are my source of info sinceDixon has not been communicating with us. I really appreciate it, and it is fun to hear about the experience from someone who was there before. You were great to share that curtain, I think the widow was the house that Dixon worked on, so that was very sweet…. Have a wonderful day and keep enjoying all the experiences that God has in store for you. Love, The Pettijohns

Buenos Dias! The medical clinic at the village went great last night and there is too much to tell so I will save that story for when I come home. We have to leave early today to go to a village more than 3 hours away so please pray for safety as we travel and getting there on time. We also have some people that are getting sick so please pray for them. I am still healthy and very thankful for that. Happy Father’s day, Daddy! Say the same to Grandpa too when you see them today! I’m missing you all but I’m trying not to be sad. I can handle the rest of the trip but I want to see you again so bad! Love you all!

Kristina – what a perfectly awesome post by you, and we can really sense that the Holy Spirit is working in a powerful way on this Team, and we continue to uphold you all in prayer. I know you miss everyone back here, but look at the benefits of being “stretched for Him”, by Him, and with Him. You could never have experienced all this joy if you had not stepped out in faith! We have had a great Father’s Day so far today; Grandpa and I had dinner with my sister Deb and Ross, their family, Aunt Mary, and Lance, and Grandpa and Grandma Van Til. We sat outside and enjoyed some sweet fellowship and food, it was such a blessing! Grandpa VT talked about Jesus and that none of us should ever be ashamed to say His name and talk of what He’s done for us, anywhere. He is in his 80′s now and has been doing this wherever he goes and urged us all to do the same, so I’m passing that on to you too. We leave in an hour to go to Aunt Becky’s for our family celebrating Grandpa, your Dad, Uncle Brian, and Uncle Jim, and the weather is holding out so we’ll be outside. Our cable was all out this morning, so just have been able to get on now, but we think of you and pray for you and your Team constantly. We love you Kristina! Grandma

So good to read your posts. Continuing to pray for you and for God’s plans for this trip. Know that He holds you in the palm of His hand.

Hey Nina! I would love to teach you the saxophone, but I’m not good at teaching because I forget that beginners do not know the fingerings haha. Thank you, I am very excited for it! My first practice is Monday night! I think it will be fun! It sounds like you are having a great time! Prayin for ya still, be safe! =)

No greater joy for this grandfather on Father’s day than to know that his granddaughter is being streched and growing in the Lord. I know you wanted to be here, but you are here in spirit and I am proud of what you are doing in Guatemala.
Let your light shine. Do something that you would not be comfortable with, but you know would be a blessing to someone else. Love Grandpa “L”

I’m eager to hear the stories of the past two nights, but that can wait until you get home, too. We’re praying for a great night tonight, and also for safety, good travel and no rain! Our hearts are with you and the whole team as you minister tonight.
We brought Kara to camp today. Pastor Bill was his crazy self, and the cars were set up for the push races later in the day, with the bus all decked out…literally! a deck is built on the top of the bus to watch the races. I think she’ll have a great week! Bill said he’s excited that you’ll be spending the summer with the staff. We went to uncle Jim and aunt Becky’s for supper and Casey, Tyler and the girls swam in the pond and we roasted hotdogs and sat on the beach in lawn chairs by a nice fire.

Miss you, love you, praying for you!

Nina – Wow, what an amazing travel adventure the team was on last night, anything is possible through prayer. I love reading your recap of events, the gum with Jenna, lol! I pray you continue to feel God’s presence with you every step of the way. Enjoy your day at the market today! I pray you will continue to share God’s love when reconnect with your building village.
I also pray tonight you feel the spirit move you like nothing you have ever experienced before, it will be amazing!!!
We sang this song yesterday at chuch and I thought about you and the team….
Keep our eyes open as we look to Jesus,
Help us to reach out to those who may need us,
and as we listen to your Holy Spirit,
may the world see us becoming like Jesus.
    Bless you Nina
    Linda

  56. Kristina says:

Okay people. Those who prayed for me to experience the spirit in ways I haven’t before and to do something uncomfortable that would praise God, those were answered. Last night I was moved to share my life with God to the people there, and the things I said were used in what Hermano Jesus preached about. I was a little scared and uncomfortable but that gave me all the more reason to do it. There was a point where Satan was trying to distract me before I went up there and I had to try really hard to ignore it. There was a 21 year old that I met named Delia and I need you to pray for her. She didn’t go up to accept Jesus but I sensed she wanted to. I hope someone else in the village can share a bible with her so that she can learn more.
We were leaving last night and we only got 15 minutes away when we got stuck trying to get up a muddy, broken up, steep hill. It took us 2 hours to make a road out of it by putting rocks in the holes and spread out the mud. Then we had to have one van drag the other, but it was done and we all cheered. It was a long hike to follow the 2 vans up and wait for the 3rd to follow later. We got to the base around 2:00 in the morning but we got to sleep in to 8:30 this morning so I’m not tired anymore. I will share more about the village we went to later when I get home. We are going to shop in Antigua today and then go back to the village we built for to visit and we have to deliver something. I’m excited that we get to go back. They were so sad when we left. I love you all once again, hehe I like saying that! The next day I will probably see you is Wednesday because we will most likely get home really early Wed. morning. Thank you so much for all your love and prayers.
p.s Mom, I gave Hermano Jesus the book and told him you send your love and prayers. He said thank you and to say hola to you!
    -Kristina

  57. your momma says:

Sounds like you had a great adventure last night…in more ways than one! I’m glad you shared last night. I was praying for that, too. I hope that today in Antigua is fun for you and that you have a good lunch and time with friends. Can’t wait to see you on Wednesday! (please call when you get to church—dad and I are both looking forward to picking you up, seeing the rest of the team, and hearing about your trip!)
    love, hugs and kisses

  58. Sharon Lycklama says:

Kristina! What Jesus has been doing this week in your life is so perfectly awesome! Right now, this blog did it for me, as I am sitting here with tears streaming down my face reading everything that happened yesterday with the Team, the unknowns, the people in the village, and that He truly is Who He said He would be! I’m praising Him for you today and for your willingness to just go and let the Lord do the rest!! He stretched you that’s for certain; and I am very anxious to hear all about your week and your incredible adventures. Have an enjoyable time in Antiqua, I remember that village well as when we traveled in Guatemala with the Wycliffe Awareness Trip and shopped in that gorgeous city! That was in 1994!! Take care of yourself, enjoy these last few days together with everyone and I’ll see you in a few days, after you get some rest and sleep, okay?!! I love you!! Grandma

  61. Brenda DeVries says:

    Kristina,

I’m praying for you all today—that the events of this week will be something that engages and grows your faith, not something that you look back on as only as a good memory–and for a good and safe trip on the roads and in the air. Love you!
can’t wait to see you soon!
