Julie:
I will be praying for you this week! Thank you so much for going on the trip, and “watching” over all the kids! I pray that you will be safe, healthy and you will be blessed as much as you will be a blessing to people there. In our prayers! Heather
Julie,
I wish I was going to be with you! You are going to have an amazing journey and adventure. Praying that God blesses you richly during this week! You will be in my prayers throughout the week!!
Big hugs,
Kristy
Julie – we will be praying for you this week and know that you will be blessed AND be a blessing while you’re in Guatemala! You can’t know how comforting it is to know that you are going to be there this week, too! God bless you! Shelley
Julie,
What an awesome opportunity…to experience and serve along side of Riley and all the other “daughters” you’ve acquired along the way. May you be blessed with good health, endless energy, safe travel, more endless energy (I know Olivia’s with you so you might need a second helping of that:) and awesome God sightings as you serve over the next week. I am praying for you.
Connie
Julie,
Our prayers are with you as you see first hand how God will be using this team this week. We all wish we could go. Thank you for being our fill in mother for the week.
God Bless
Sheri Tolar
Julie,
We pray you have an awesome adventure and hope your “mothering” duties don’t overwhelm you!!! I too am grateful for the Moms that are there to keep an eye on our kids. Have a safe and wonderful trip and we’ll be anxious to hear your experiences!
Praying for you!
Jodi
Julie:
Know that we will be praying for you–not only for what you asked me to pray about, but lots of other things as well! May you experience God’s presence and peace in abundance as you serve Him by serving others on your amazing team and those precious children in Guatemala. Let His love flow through your words and deeds! I have been unable to gather the courage to make the Guatemala journey myself, but maybe you’ll be able to convince me once you get back. Just call me “Mini-me Jonah” (I’m not proud of it).
Shine with joy,
Lynette
“Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.” Daniel 12:3
Julie, I appreciate you being a part of this trip. You will bring fun, maternal and medical expertise to this precious group of kids. In being a blessing to others you will sure to be blessed yourself. Thank You in advance for showing us how to Give Strong.

Julie,
I was inspired by your conviciton to go on this trip. It takes great courage to step “out of the box” and make yourself vulnerable to the faith challenges from God. It is comforting to know that there is a medical mom out there with our kids; but I will pray that nobody needs medical care! I will pray for protection, for health and for wisdom….for sleep for energy and for Peace.

*PS – some how Dixon received your blog first – ha! Tell Dixon that I don’t think of him like a medical mom
Hi Jules and Riley,
We all missed you at the wild party last night! We are praying for you and I hope you are having a wonderful time.
Love you!
Julie,
Have a wonderful, awesome time! These will be some of the best memories you will have. You will come back with a new view! If you know what I mean!
Lori
Glad, so glad, to hear you have arrived safely. I’ll bet you guys are exhausted but there’s so much ahead! I’ll pray for that amazing 40 something stamina that will surpass any teenager in the group. Can’t wait to hear the updates and prayer requests. Sounds like Doug, Emmy, Molly and Ivy could use a little supervision. XO
Julie,
Praying for you, Riley and everyone else daily. I’m excited to see what God has planned for you this week in Guatemala. Have a great time experiencing God and being a blessing to others! (we’ll call Doug once in while so he doesn’t get lonely)
Brenda Goodyke
Jules, Blessings dear one as you have many hats to wear this week–team mate, mom to many and medical caregiver! Each day will be different and I will pray for your wisdom as tasks arrive. I know your love, joy and calm spirit will be contagious.
I am excited for you!
Dear Julie, How fun to think that you will be working with Dixon…..we are praying for all of you, have a great week, love, the Pettijohns
Good morning Julie,
I am so excited for you today as you begin the building project! You are going to have a blast and your small group is going to move mountains. You will be amazed at how quickly your home goes up! Enjoy every moment, even the hard ones, because I know that you are there for a purpose. I can’t wait to hear your stories.
Big hugs,
Kristy
Dear Julie,
Constant prayers are being lifted up for you and the team. I am also praying for your small group, may there be a real sense of comfort and unity there that enables walls to be torn down, hearts to be shared, hurts to be healed and relationships to flourish. Praying that God will give you strength, health, and direction for each situation that you face. Thank you for your willingness to serve. Connie
Jule- I am missing you! Helped doug and marv paint last night. Think about you aolot and Riley too. I am also considering what you are sleeping on (me with bed issues)! Please be safe and come home energized and renewed, even though physically you will be tired.
Love you
Lo
Hi Julie,
I read about the trip getting to Guatemala – already God is at work, why do we ever wonder that, He’s always a step ahead of us. I know all of you will be blessed beyond words. “This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice & be glad in it” – praying for you to experience that feeling and knowledge each day you’re there.
Continued prayers,
Connie
Hey girl!!! I am so proud of you and Riley for heading to Guatamala! I really enjoyed my trip there a few years ago….lots of really sweet people and beautiful country. You and Riley are in my prayers for a wonderful spiritual and serving experience! Can’t wait to hear about all the adventures when you return….AARRGG (pirate talk!)
Hugs….
Hey everyone- Day #1 done…..eeekkkkkk…getting called to group worship now…..will log back on in a bit if I can. Heavy rain plays havic with internet connection….will try to get back on again. Julie
Hi Julie! Pouring over everyones messages of encouragement and prayers is a way cool thing. Our kids write with amazement in the environment, the people and even the food… Trusting God that you are feeling it too. So thankful for you and all the quality leadership. You and Riley have certainly shared many life experiences. Praying this will be a positive like no other.
Back again. 9.30 pm here. More than ready to go to bed. Very long but exciting day. Read our group blog for details. The lesson I learned today is as follows: Yesterday we cut open 120 pound bags of rice to put them in individual bags. I took the large empty rice bags to throw them away. Staff here stopped me as the bags are reused to carry items into the village. I thought I was good at recycling but made note I should be a bit better. Today during a torential (sp) rain storm a guatemalan woman took my backpack off the ground and waved me into her home( a place we usually are not in). It was almost pitch dark as they have no lights and we were in a storm. In a few minutes my eyes ajusted to the dark. In the corner of the room, suspended from the ceiling at waist level was an oval, wood frame covered with one of the same rice bags I was going to throw away the day before. In the middle of this rice bag stretched over the frame was her sleeping baby. It was his bed!!! At the very least day #1 has already altered my perspective of “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. Love you Doug! Miss my good friends back home (you know who you are) and all the rest that are praying us through this.
Dear Julie, Wow! thank YOu for sharing your story of the day. All of us at home will be reminded of that lesson as we “take care of those bags.” It was wonderful reading through all the teams’ stories of day #1–God spoke/touched each one of you with an experience or ahh moment, just as He knows each one of you by name. You are all special to Him and what a plan He has for you! Be Blessed!
Hi Mom!
I miss you and I am glad that you are ok. Yesterday morning, at about 6:30 am, I surprised Dad and let the dogs back in the house. I scared him pretty good. I couldn’t call him to let him know that I was coming over because my phone is broken. I took care of the animals all morning then Dad and I went to IHOP for lunch and then we went to Best Buy and got a new phone for me. It is a really cool yellow and black one.
If you see a Chicago Bulls hat or shirt would you get it for me?
I love you,
Chad
Loved the note you wrote last night…really made me think. Keep writing when you can, it makes me feel closer. P.S. Could have given Ben’s phone to Chad this week… it doesn’t seem like he (Ben) needs it !!!! My prayers continue.
Good morning Julie,
Thank you so much for sharing that story of the bags! It always amazes me how God can change our perspective so quickly and clearly. That is an awesome God sighting. Thank you for your willingness to serve. Today is a great day when relationships are built even stronger with the villagers. Praying for NO RAIN while you are doing the stucco. Take care and have a blessed day,
big hugs,
Kristy
Jule I can imagine you there in the woman’s home. Brought tears to my eyes. I can’t imagine the emotions that you must be going through. I am grateful that people like you are willing to make the sacrifice of leaving the comfort of your home and life to reach out to others. What a difference in these peoples lives! You are a brave, selfless, beautiful, witty woman and a dear friend. Your turn. Love you girlfriend.
Lo
Hi everyone- we have limited time to write so I cannot reply to everyone individually so I will try to respond to everyone in one email. We just got back to base. We have to shower by group number and mine is last so I dashed to the computer. I write covered from head to toe with pink stucko and drywall dust. The houses are coming along wonderfully. Thanks to Katelynn’s spanish ability she and I spent about an hour talking with the women of the village. They are all related. Yes…..all related. We figured out who’s kids were whose and who was married to whom. Still hard to see 16-17 year old girls with babies on their backs or nursing. They marry young. Kevin VW took a small photo printer with him that he attached to his camara. He took small family photos. Many of the woman cried when he handed them a photo because they never had a picture of themselves and their families before. They held the 2×3 photos against their chests while tears streamed down their faces. I will never complain about working on my photo album again.
Once again the food was very good. Bread torillas, broccoli and zuchini in butter and black beans/rice. These chicas can cook (even if it is the same thing everyday for them it was wonderful for us).
For about 1/2 an hour we had a circular rainbow around the sun. So much moisture in the air. I love rainbows. Make me think about Travis and how much he would have loved this trip. Maybe he was closer than I think. I thank God for the sign.
As I took many of the photos today I may not appear in many. I am here and working just frequently behind the camara. Miss you all. Filled my photo memory card already. Have tons of stories. God is good. Love you all (but especially Doug)- Julie
Hi Julie!
I’ve been praying for you continually. Wow! What experiences you’ve had already! Those of us back home can’t even begin to imagine. Thanks for sharing and making a difference in the lives of those over there as well as back here. You are amazing!
Love,
Mary
I love how rainbows show up for you. What a gift. Trav would have loved this trip.
Julie:
It sounds like everyone is healthy so far! Praise the Lord! Wow…, your story about the rice bag touched my heart. (“Tissue Time” is my new term for mt time to check all the postings about the Guatemala trip.) You know, our lives are kind of like that old, “useless” rice bag sometimes. We feel so inadequate to do the “important” work for God; we are clueless as to how valuable we are in God’s eyes. When we allow Him to use us, He transforms us and uses us to do things that are totally beyond our comprehension. Had it not rained, you would never have gotten to see this wonder–or seen the rainbows! God is certainly there with you all doing His work–in you and through you!
Love you,
Lynette
Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding.” Prov. 3:5 AMP
Julie, thanking God for the rainbow he gave you today. So understand how those signs can give you a warm fuzzy. The posts, pics and blogs are very moving. The same technology that can at times be a curse is such a blessing to those of us who are praying you through each moment of this trip. It helps me feel so connected. Thank you for sharing this time with our kids. Health, safety, and continued God sightings are my prayer for you and the team. Connie
Hi Julie,
Thanks for sharing your stories. It is all so humbling isn’t it?
It sounds like you have had some amazing “God sightings!” WOW! So glad that you got to see a rainbow. That had to be a very special moment and memory. I know there are many more “stories” and “moments” to come!
I’m so thankful that you are staying strong and healthy! Slapping that stucco on the houses is great exercise for those arms but exhausting! Hope you sleep good tonight and get rested up for another day of rewarding work.
Praying for you and the team every day!
~ Kim ~
Hi Jules,
Rainbows are special, it is funny that I had thought about that today. I went through the garbage today for the recyclables. Thanks for the guilt! Please get a picture of your stucco job. After seeing you caulk and patch, I just can’t picture it……..
We are all fine here. Love you tons.
Julie – you are an amazing woman! Thank you so much for sharing! You are continually in our prayers as you work hard and spread God’s love! Heather
God is so Great! That rainbow was a special hug for you Julie. Love you so much and continue to be Blessed with these hugs. Zep. 3:17 The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. (take care of all of you). He will take great delight in you, (you are all having such a delight–giving) He will quiet you with His Love, He will rejoice over you with singing. (or rainbows!) Hugs!
You are being prayed for constantly and I love to read your posts! I always seem to get teary-eyed when I read them. You truly are amazing and God is being glorified through you!
Shelley
Julie, today it seems like you guys have all been gone for a long time. I didn’t expect to get a personal spiritual revival but in reading your updates and those of the others…I have. So you see, you are not only a blessing to those you directly serve but also with those, like myself, who are reading the words. I am supposed to be getting ready for vacation and all I want to do is sit at the computer!! Thank-you for all you do both directly and indirectly. I join the others when I sincerely say… you are an amazing woman. XO
Julie, Thanks for all the updates and for the sharing with all of us. We really appreciate reading these updates, I can’t even tell you how many times I keep clicking on the computer to see what has been happening. I was really touched by your words about Travis, because I too was thinking how he would have loved the time there and the experience. I just loved watching him with Wilfredo when he was at our house, he just had that special way of enfolding people. Love to you all, and keep sending those posts and all the photos that are so meaningful for us. I am eager to see the team one house photos and the finish, I am sure it is amazing. Love you, Bob and Carole
Hi everyone-
Finished the houses today. I thought that would be the highlight. Providing a home for a widow would be a pretty amazing thing considering that in faith they tore down her cornstalk and tin dwelling the week before. As gratifying as seeing the faces of her and her three children (the fourth one was at work for the week) was when they all knelled down and with tears streaming down their faces accepted Christ as their savior. The 14 year old boy’s body was shaking he was sobbing so hard. Our 7 member team, Dan and the pastor were in the house while the rest of the group continually prayed and sang as we were unsure the spiritual status of the family. We did this at each house and presented them gifts. I have never had an experience like this before. Worth every minute and ounce of effort expended toward this trip. I have taken tons of pictures and cannot wait to share the stories with all of you. Check out today’s blog and pictures for more. I do miss all of you. Tomorrow we drive 1-2 hours away to begin the medical portion of this trip and present the “jesus” video. Begin praying that the people will be open to accepting Christ. Love you all. Julie
Hi Jules,
There is a medical portion of the trip????? Wow!!!!
Now that I know you are good at. I am just kidding. I have been praying for you all day again. I miss you tons.
Hi Julie,
Sounds like you are having an amazing experience so far and God is already blessing you as you bless others. Thanks for giving us a picture of what its like to be there, it really touches our hearts. Were thanking God for health and safety so far and will continue to pray daily. I hope and pray you grow closer to Christ as you are wowed many more times this week. Enjoy each day!
Love ya
Brenda
Julie, Thank you so much for taking the time to share those stories with all of us! I was so glad that we found that printer for Kevin to take down, because those pictures that they have now are so important. I remember one village when I took a picture of a grandma (she was the oldest woman and the matriarch of the village) with the old Poloroid camera. When I gave her the picture and she watched it develop, she did the same thing…she clutched it to her chest and said, “thank you, now I won’t be forgotten!” The family pictures are priceless to them.
You are making such a difference down there and your words are ministering to those of us here at home. May God be with you and the team tomorrow as you begin the next phase. Your medical training will be such a blessing for Dan and for the villagers you are going to help! Praying for safe travel there and back, praying for health for you and the team and praying that the villagers hearts are already being prepared by the Holy Spirit!
great big hugs,
Kristy
Julie
It is late here and I should be in bed because my day started off way to early this morning, but I just wanted to say Hi. It is hard to put into words the feelings that you have after reading the posts and seeing the pictures. You are not there but yet you can feel the love and the committment for the people through what you see. Thanks for working behind the scenes and for taking many of the pics. They bless us so much back home. My heart goes out to you as I am sure you think of Travis often, but am so glad that you are there with Riley to share in this once in a lifetime experience. Lifting you up, Lisa
P.S That pic of Riley and Lauren really brought back memories. I think I have one very similar to that one about 10 years in EL school
God weaves together His master plan in such amazing ways. Prayers for you daily, Barb
Your sharing means so much to all of us. Go and be used by God today as you help at the medical clinic…..I can just see the glow on your face…!!!!! Carole
Hi all- slept in….6.30 am. Packing up meds and supplies for long drive to set up medical clinic and show the Jesus video. It will be a late night so I am writing now. I am sure today will provide stories for tomorrows email. Everyone remains healthy…..no major illnesses but the change in diet has made none of us “trust a fart”. Oh well….pray for safety. We all feel safe within the walled base with an armed guard at the gate but we will be far away from “home” today. A new phrase I learned here is “don’t expect million dollar answers when you give up a 10 cent prayer”. When I say pray for our safety I don’t mean a Western Michigan mumble. Stop what you are doing and really pray for us…..except for Lynnette Dooley who does her best praying in the car! We are in his hands, doing what he wants us to do, at the exact time he wants us to do it. Give us the strength we need through your prayers to follow through. We have limited time on the computer so I have not even seen our pictures on this site. Hope they are helpful to you to see what we write about. Love you all. Julie
Hey Jules,
How about may I pray while I paint? It seems to have been working so far. Sue, Steve and I are the painting crew today. All is well.
Love ya tons!
Hi Julie, Thanks for all the updates! Love them ! You have been in my thoughts and prayers all week. What an experience. I will continue to pray for God to work in the hearts of the people as your team ministers to them. Thanks for the little reminders of Travis. We know he always wanted to go on mission trips! We will say a HUGE prayer for safety the next couple of days. Love, Sue
Jules – I love that you’ve seized the opportunity to go on this trip with Yelir. I’m sure she’s glad you are there but I know many others will be blessed by your quick wit, your smarts, your compassion and your generous spirit. Much love and prayers sent your way.
Julie,
In my last message, I told you I get teary eyed when I read your updates….this time I laughed so hard at the “trust a fart” comment! SSSSOOOOO funny!! Anyway, I love everything you wrote about the praying and I am so touched with your words – thanks!! I will be praying (Central American style) for each one of you!
Love,
Shelley
Thanks for the prayers. Never ever experienced such a thing before. About 50 people came up…..not quitely but with tears streaming down their faces, shaking with sobs, praying loudly, confessing their sins and expressing gratitude. Young, old, male, female. Amazing…not a dry eye in the place. Riley gave her testimony….very proud of her. Standing before a whole village she told her experience with god since Travis died. This is a group of people who could relate to death of a family member and she had them in the palm of her hand….you could have heard a pin drop. The Holy Spirit is working in my little “chicka”.
I was in the medical clinic the whole time. Many meds dispensed. Felt very helpless when a middle age man was brougt to me. The left side of his head was visably depressed. When asked what happened his family said a tree fell on his head 11 months ago. Since then he hasn’t talked, has difficulty and pain with using his right arm, and can’t understand simple instructions and can’t do the things he usually does. I stood helpless before this man and his family. There was nothing I could do for a closed head injury post depressed skull fracture. We told the family to have him keep exercising the right arm so he would not lose muscle tone and gave him Ibuprofen. I think of what could have been in the states right away with neurosurgery.
We did help others and I focus on that. Have to go. Feliz dias de papa (Happy Father’s Day). We love you Doug…..Look for picture today that expresses that!!! Julie
Julie,
What an amazing experience you are having! The power of God is so effective on the hearts of people – how wonderful that Riley gave her testimony, our own tears can bring healing to others.
Continued thoughts & prayers,
Connie
Hi Jules,
I saw the picture. Thank you for the wonderful Father’s Day and Birthday present. I am praying that you make it back to your base safely tonight. It sounds like quite the adventure today.
Luv ya!
Julie, Powerful stories! I am so proud of Riley for letting her guard down and sharing her testimony, It’s hard to be vulnerable, even when its for God. Praying boldly for your travels today and the hearts of those you are yet to come in contact with May the Holy Spirit move through the village leaving no heart untouched. Praying that the group is able to stay healthy and strong. Thank you for serving and impacting Olivia’s life, not just on this trip but in all the time she spends with your family. Love, Connie
I Love My Wife!
Praying for your safe return. Praying that you are not back seat driving.
Love you.
Good morning Riley, A beautiful day here, all the bird are singing praises for the new day and week. I could not get to sleep last night –at 2:30 am I read my Ps.20 for the day and I read..May the Lord answer you when you are in distress; may the name of the God of Jacob protect you… That was my clue to check your e-mail and I read you were in the mud! So than I knew I was to stay up and pray for the team–I went to sleep after 4am and now see that is about the time you came home!? That Ps. also says–”Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” Amen! You are all home safe,a great birthday gift for your dad!
Oh my! I am still sleepy after my long night–I see I posted Riley on Julie–but ya know, its all the same. Please give Riley my message –Love sent
Hope you can relax today and enjoy all the life changing things that have been going on….now God can finish all the work that the team began. Thanks for being there and for serving. Bob and Carole
Hello Everyone-
Happy Birthday Doug. I am the first one up of the girls/women as we pulled in at 2.30 am after digging in the mud and throwing rocks on the road to get the vans up a 1/2 mile incline….think about 45 degrees almost. Ankle deep in mud….then 4 hour very bumpy van ride back to the base. I just wanted to make sure I got to the computer to let you know Riley and i have kept you in our thoughts yesterday and today. I hope you have gotten some rest and not gone crazy with Macrace. Take some time off and enjoy the day.
Medical clinic last night was harder and longer. Saw facial scars and heart problems that were out of our scope to fix. The 20 year old man that I think may have a potentially fatal heart abnormality did give his life over to the lord. I was looking for him particularly during that part of the evening because he is up 10 miles of twisting, rugged mountain roads and I am unsure if he can ever get to a cardiologist. Even so….he should never do manual labor….which is what he has to do to feed himself and his 16 year old wife. They have been married for 4 years!!! yes…that made her 12 years old. We did not have the medicine to slow down his heart rate and if we did he would need to be on it for life. I do not know the future but from a human standpoint it does not look good for him…giving his life to christ was the best thing he could do. Time to go….clean up our mess from last night….clean up ourselves….head to antigua for shopping with a quick stop at our building village. I am looking for a scrub brush for Maria Enriquetia as hers only had a few bristles left on the wooden base. Think it will be a bit of a challenge over the next 48 hours as we transition back to our previous lives….I almost said back to the real world but here almost feels more like the “real world”. Again, Happy Birthday Doug!!!!! Love, Julie
Mrs.G!!
Mom finally told me what this thing is and I have been reading up on the blog! The work you are doing is good and I cant wait for you to come back and tell us all what happened. I love you guys come back safe!

Hi all- leaving for antigua. Will be back by dinner time. Found out dad has been in the hospital. Will pray for him but details would be helpful
Hi Jules,
Thank you for the birthday wishes. Just had lunch at the Omelette Shoppe with Brett and Chad.
Glad to hear you are ok. Molly woke me up hourly to check your status and pray. Dad is fine. He had pneumonia. Brought him in Thursday, he got out Saturday night. Your brother, Steve, took your place as health care interpretor for my folks. He did a great job. My first time in 25 years that I had the chance to be in the house alone and my parents end up moving in!
I love you.
Hey Julie,
Sound like you guys are having an awesome time. What a great experience to share with Riley. Just wanted to say thanks for taking care of Courtney in her time of need being sick. Sounds like she needed you. Praying for safe travels home with out delays. Hope you enjoyed your shopping today and found your scrub brush. The little thing we take so for granted.
Sheri
Julie:
Your posts make me cry…and then they make me laugh until I cry again! Thanks so much for letting us get a tiny glimpse into the great work you have done. How good it is to know that those you served in Guatemala will never be the same, nor will you, or will Grandville once you all return. You have seen God do amazing things and are now more confident than ever of how He can continue to use you all for His glory and purposes! I neglected to tell you that the original “prayer mobile” is no longer with me–it had too many “service this and that” lights lit up on the dashboard for Bill to feel comfortable with me driving all over Michigan in it to visit my Mom, judge cheerleading…and PRAY, of course. Will continue to pray until the vans roll in the parking lot at church!!!!
Love,
Lynette
Be sure to do what you should, for then you will enjoy the personal satisfaction of having done your work well, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. Galations 6:4 NLT
Well done, good and faithful servant!
Aw, Julie! There has been so much activity this past week! Thanks for taking us all along and letting us experience some of it through your writings. God has certainly worked in marvelous ways and it sounds like none of you will be the same. I hope the memories will last forever. You have made me laugh out-loud and cry big tears. Thanks for being there, Praying for your safe return and a smooth transition to “normal” God has full control. XO

LONG DAY OF TRAVEL TOMORROW…..LITERALLY AND FIGURATIVELY COMING DOWN OFF THE MOUNTAIN……PRAY FOR TRAVEL SAFETY AND OUR TRANSITION INTO THE “REAL WORLD”,,,,,,,*MISS YOU ALL AND WILL HURRY HOME AS FAST AS I CAN…..lOVE, jULIE
